Bernstein has been a professional artist for more than forty years. He was Professor of Art and Co-Head and then Head of Printmaking at Indiana University, Bloomington 1991-2013 until retirement. He was founder and Director “Indiana University Printmaking and Artists Books, Scuola di Grafica, Venice, Italy,” 2000-2013, 2016.
In 2014, he opened Chiaroscuro Press & Studio, a private workshop in Bloomington.
Education includes: MFA, printmaking, Indiana 1973; Atelier 17, Paris; B.F.A, painting Rhode Island School of Design. He exhibits in major national, international juried and invited exhibitions and been a visiting artist in the US, Canada, Brazil, Italy, France, Netherlands, Russia, Portugal, UK. His work is in museums in the US, UK, Italy, Portugal, Russia, and China. Residencies include University of West England,Bristol; Masereel Centrum, Belgium.
Recent important juried exhibitions include: 2021: UnEditioned, Manhattan Graphics center. 2020- Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana Regional Showcase, Manifest Gallery, Cincinatti, OH. 2019-Delta National Small Print Exhibition (purchase prize), Pacific States N. American Print Biennial, 5th Bangkok Triennal Print and Drawing Exhibition(Drawing), Boston Printmakers N. American Print Biennial. 2018- Novosibirsk International Triennial, Russia and Fondation, Fondation États Unis, Paris.
Bernstein has given demonstrations, curated international exhibitions, chaired printmaking panels, exhibited in SGC International printmaking conferences: 2008 -2018, IMPACT 2009,2011, and Mid- American Print Conference, September 2014-18.
